EDM310 Rap - Project 16

EDM 310 Rap
By Justin Hyde and Brandin Brosh

LYRICS:

Imma Be

This one goe s out to Dr. Strange and the EDM crew,
‘Cause this wouldn’t be possible with out you.

Working hard 9 hours a week
I could do EDM310 in my sleep
Sometimes I see Dr. Strange when I blink
Yeah, I know what you think/
It is a bit scary
His beard is so hairy
When it comes to technology He knows what to do
If he taught me, I promise he can teach you
At the beginning I didn’t have a clue
Now I blog, tweet, and use Symballoo

Technology and education
feed it to our kids like medication
Today’s school system is like probation.

Most teachers won’t let kids think critically
They run their classrooms so politically.
If you go against the norm you brew up a storm
And other Teachers will start to stare and scorn.

This semester in EDM310
I learned so much I can’t even begin
A lab that is open at all times.
ask any question that blows your mind
More lab assistants than you can count
They will answer your questions without a doubt

EDM310.blogspot.com
It’s where you can find the class blog
It’s got all the information you’ll need to help you succeed
When you’re there you will see that we are going green
That’s all thanks to technology
‘Cause it’s the 21st century.

I don’t know, let’s find out
Don’t worry, we’re gonna get this figured out
Make sure you bring your brain
Don’t forget to turn it on/
This journey is gonna be a lot of fun

C4K C4C C4T,
Whatever it may be,
You better get it done weekly if you want a good grade like me.

The one class it’s impossible to procrastinate
if you do your work will be late.
Dr. Strange ain’t gonna let that skate
So there is no need to try and debate

Education and technology is a MUST
If you’re not with it
You better jump on the bus

Technology is the key to the future
Let your voice be heard
Don’t let ‘em mute ya.

Blog Post 14 (Special Assignment)

1. Why did you miss the metaphor in Tom Johnson's post, or, if you "hit the nail on the head", why do you think you understood the metaphor and why do you think that others in the class missed the metaphor? Everyone was probably doing the same thing I was and this is just reading the post and trying to write about it as quickly as possible instead of truely trying to find the meaning in this metaphor.

2. What metaphors have you encountered since I asked you to create a log of them? There are several metaphors I hear at work all the time. One is "Time flies by, when your having fun"

Photobucket

3. What other things can we do as educators to help our students to understand and to use metaphors? By breaking down the metaphors piece by piece and then show them what this metaphor means and why and what context they could be used in.

4. Why do we use metaphors? I think people use metaphors because they can be fun and also because it is a catchy way of saying things.

Final Report on PLN

For my personal learning network I started a Symbaloo. I have found this website to be extremely useful. When I open my computer up I have all my favorite websites and also the websites that I will need for school at the click of a button. It saves me time from having to search from website to website. A reason I like Symbaloo is that it is super easy to you and keeps me completely organized. I not only have all three of my emails on there but I also have the website for my online classes saved. This website allows me to navigate quickly and get my work done faster.

C4T #4 Liz B. Davis

For the month of April I was assigned to comment on Liz B. Davis's blog called THE POWER OF EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY. Her blog had a wide variety of educational videos and blog post. For my first comment I chose to comment on her blog post that had to do with a young man in her class writing a speech "Who are you? Who are you really?". This is what I had to say:

Hi,
I am Justin Hyde and I am also student in Dr.Stranges EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama."Who are you?" can be made up of many different things. To me it is somewhat how I act, how I feel, and who I want to be. This is how I come up with the best answer for this question.

Photobucket

Comment number two on Liz Davis's blog was on a post about wishing people were not afraid of failing. The name of this post was "Dare some mighty things..." and it had to do with not being afraid of failing. This is what I had to say:

Hi Liz,
My name is Justin Hyde and I am currently a student in Dr. Stange’s EDM310 course at the University of South Alabama. I think everyone needs some form of motivation every once in awhile. Also I think everyone should be less afraid of failing. I grandma once told me "you will never know unless you try." These are great words of wisdom.

Comments For Kids 7, 8, 9, & 10

Mr. McClung

For my comments for kids seven I was assigned to comment on Mr. McClungs blog. The specific post I was assigned was called "Just Like Riding a Bike". This post was basically about having time off and having to get back into the same old pattern. This is what I had to say:

Hi Mr. McClung. My name is Justin Hyde and I am currently a student in Dr. Stange’s EDM310 course at the University of South Alabama. I love this post because I think everyone can relate to this. I was recently out of school for 10 days due to spring break and I was definitely ready to get back to school. It’s so hard when you lose your pace though and it feels like you have to get back in the swing of things all over again. It’s tough! Good thing summer is coming up, but come August I will have to learn to ride my bike all over again!

For my comments for kids eight I was assigned to comment on Ms. Thompson's sixth grade class in Adelaide, Australia. The student in the class I was assigned to comment on was Erin. Erin's blog post was about Persuasive Writing and she wrote about animal cruelty. This is what I had to say:

Hi Erin,
My name is Justin Hyde. I attend the University of South Alabama and I am in Dr. Stranges EDM 310 class. I thought you did a very nice job in this writing assignment and you gave great details that supported your argument. I could tell that you really feel strong about fighting for the fair treatment of animals.I do also agree that animals should be kept in those small cages either. Once again I think you did very well on your paper.

For my comments for kids nine I was assigned to comment on Mrs. Yollis class blog. The blog I was assigned to comment on was family blogging month, this is where the parent and family comment on the classes blog posts. This is what I said:

Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
My name is Justin Hyde. I am a student at University South Alabama. I am in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class. I really like the way that you have set up your blog. I think that it is very interesting that you have set aside a month to get families involved in class. Good luck and I hope you have many great comments to come.
I will be writing about your blog in a few weeks. You can see my blog here.
Thanks,
Justin Hyde

For my comments for kids ten I was assigned to comment on Hannah's Hacienda most recent blog post. This happened to be on an Iranian celebration called Seezdah-Bedar. This is what I had to say:

Hi Hannah,
My name is Justin Hyde and I am a student at the University of South Alabama in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class. I thought your last blog post about Seezdeh-Bedar was very interesting. This is a tradition that I have never heard of and I have a question. Is this tradition only celebrated on the 13th day or for 13 days? Also you looked like you were having a great time with your friends at the park. Great post thank you.

The Alabama Learning Exchange, also known as ALEX, is a great reference that more teachers should take advantage of. This link was developed to help teachers know the requirements that should be taught on that grade level. The teacher just chooses the grade and subject to receive the Alabama State teaching requirements. Web Resources is a link to other resources, which are directed toward teachers. The website was very simple to navigate through and had tons of useful information for teachers. They even have written out lesson plans for teachers. I think personally in the near future if I was teaching and needed ideas I could find this website very useful.

The Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators, and Students Statewide also known as ACCESS program’s goal is to make sure that each and every child has an equal opportunity learning. This is a website invented to allow parents the information to make sure there high school kid has all the necessary tools to further their education.

Project 15 - Book Trailer - "The Ugly Ducking"

Progress Report on Final Project

Photobucket For my final project I have partnered up with classmate Brandin Brosh. We together came up with the creative final project that involves us both singing about what we have learned in EDM 310. I am really excited about this project. We just started but everything has bee going great so far.

After reading this article has it changed your way in thinking about how schools in the United States are constructed? Did you have any other thoughts about the speech?

Valedictorian Speaks Out Against Schooling in Graduation Speech

Last month, Erica Goldson graduated as valedictorian of Coxsackie-Athens High School. Instead of using her graduation speech to celebrate the triumph of her victory, the school, and the teachers that made it happen, she channeled her inner Ivan Illich and de-constructed the logic of a valedictorian and the whole educational system. In doing so, is now one of my heroes.
Erica originally posted her full speech on Sign of the Times, and without need for editing or cutting, here's the speech in its entirety:
Here I stand
There is a story of a young, but earnest Zen student who approached his teacher, and asked the Master, "If I work very hard and diligently, how long will it take for me to find Zen? The Master thought about this, then replied, "Ten years . ." The student then said, "But what if I work very, very hard and really apply myself to learn fast — How long then?" Replied the Master, "Well, twenty years." "But, if I really, really work at it, how long then?" asked the student. "Thirty years," replied the Master. "But, I do not understand," said the disappointed student. "At each time that I say I will work harder, you say it will take me longer. Why do you say that?" Replied the Master, "When you have one eye on the goal, you only have one eye on the path."
This is the dilemma I've faced within the American education system. We are so focused on a goal, whether it be passing a test, or graduating as first in the class. However, in this way, we do not really learn. We do whatever it takes to achieve our original objective.
Some of you may be thinking, "Well, if you pass a test, or become valedictorian, didn't you learn something? Well, yes, you learned something, but not all that you could have. Perhaps, you only learned how to memorize names, places, and dates to later on forget in order to clear your mind for the next test. School is not all that it can be. Right now, it is a place for most people to determine that their goal is to get out as soon as possible.
I am now accomplishing that goal. I am graduating. I should look at this as a positive experience, especially being at the top of my class. However, in retrospect, I cannot say that I am any more intelligent than my peers. I can attest that I am only the best at doing what I am told and working the system. Yet, here I stand, and I am supposed to be proud that I have completed this period of indoctrination. I will leave in the fall to go on to the next phase expected of me, in order to receive a paper document that certifies that I am capable of work. But I contest that I am a human being, a thinker, an adventurer – not a worker. A worker is someone who is trapped within repetition – a slave of the system set up before him. But now, I have successfully shown that I was the best slave. I did what I was told to the extreme. While others sat in class and doodled to later become great artists, I sat in class to take notes and become a great test-taker. While others would come to class without their homework done because they were reading about an interest of theirs, I never missed an assignment. While others were creating music and writing lyrics, I decided to do extra credit, even though I never needed it. So, I wonder, why did I even want this position? Sure, I earned it, but what will come of it? When I leave educational institutionalism, will I be successful or forever lost? I have no clue about what I want to do with my life; I have no interests because I saw every subject of study as work, and I excelled at every subject just for the purpose of excelling, not learning. And quite frankly, now I'm scared.
John Taylor Gatto, a retired school teacher and activist critical of compulsory schooling, asserts, "We could encourage the best qualities of youthfulness – curiosity, adventure, resilience, the capacity for surprising insight simply by being more flexible about time, texts, and tests, by introducing kids into truly competent adults, and by giving each student what autonomy he or she needs in order to take a risk every now and then. But we don't do that." Between these cinderblock walls, we are all expected to be the same. We are trained to ace every standardized test, and those who deviate and see light through a different lens are worthless to the scheme of public education, and therefore viewed with contempt.
H. L. Mencken wrote in The American Mercury for April 1924 that the aim of public education is not "to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence. … Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim … is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is its aim in the United States."
To illustrate this idea, doesn't it perturb you to learn about the idea of "critical thinking." Is there really such a thing as "uncritically thinking?" To think is to process information in order to form an opinion. But if we are not critical when processing this information, are we really thinking? Or are we mindlessly accepting other opinions as truth?
This was happening to me, and if it wasn't for the rare occurrence of an avant-garde tenth grade English teacher, Donna Bryan, who allowed me to open my mind and ask questions before accepting textbook doctrine, I would have been doomed. I am now enlightened, but my mind still feels disabled. I must retrain myself and constantly remember how insane this ostensibly sane place really is.
And now here I am in a world guided by fear, a world suppressing the uniqueness that lies inside each of us, a world where we can either acquiesce to the inhuman nonsense of corporatism and materialism or insist on change. We are not enlivened by an educational system that clandestinely sets us up for jobs that could be automated, for work that need not be done, for enslavement without fervency for meaningful achievement. We have no choices in life when money is our motivational force. Our motivational force ought to be passion, but this is lost from the moment we step into a system that trains us, rather than inspires us.
We are more than robotic bookshelves, conditioned to blurt out facts we were taught in school. We are all very special, every human on this planet is so special, so aren't we all deserving of something better, of using our minds for innovation, rather than memorization, for creativity, rather than futile activity, for rumination rather than stagnation? We are not here to get a degree, to then get a job, so we can consume industry-approved placation after placation. There is more, and more still.
The saddest part is that the majority of students don't have the opportunity to reflect as I did. The majority of students are put through the same brainwashing techniques in order to create a complacent labor force working in the interests of large corporations and secretive government, and worst of all, they are completely unaware of it. I will never be able to turn back these 18 years. I can't run away to another country with an education system meant to enlighten rather than condition. This part of my life is over, and I want to make sure that no other child will have his or her potential suppressed by powers meant to exploit and control. We are human beings. We are thinkers, dreamers, explorers, artists, writers, engineers. We are anything we want to be – but
only if we have an educational system that supports us rather than holds us down. A tree can grow, but only if its roots are given a healthy foundation.
For those of you out there that must continue to sit in desks and yield to the authoritarian ideologies of instructors, do not be disheartened. You still have the opportunity to stand up, ask questions, be critical, and create your own perspective. Demand a setting that will provide you with intellectual capabilities that allow you to expand your mind instead of directing it. Demand that you be interested in class. Demand that the excuse, "You have to learn this for the test" is not good enough for you. Education is an excellent tool, if used properly, but focus more on learning rather than getting good grades.
For those of you that work within the system that I am condemning, I do not mean to insult; I intend to motivate. You have the power to change the incompetencies of this system. I know that you did not become a teacher or administrator to see your students bored. You cannot accept the authority of the governing bodies that tell you what to teach, how to teach it, and that you will be punished if you do not comply. Our potential is at stake.
For those of you that are now leaving this establishment, I say, do not forget what went on in these classrooms. Do not abandon those that come after you. We are the new future and we are not going to let tradition stand. We will break down the walls of corruption to let a garden of knowledge grow throughout America. Once educated properly, we will have the power to do anything, and best of all, we will only use that power for good, for we will be cultivated and wise. We will not accept anything at face value. We will ask questions, and we will demand truth.
So, here I stand. I am not standing here as valedictorian by myself. I was molded by my environment, by all of my peers who are sitting here watching me. I couldn't have accomplished this without all of you. It was all of you who truly made me the person I am today. It was all of you who were my competition, yet my backbone. In that way, we are all valedictorians.
I am now supposed to say farewell to this institution, those who maintain it, and those who stand with me and behind me, but I hope this farewell is more of a "see you later" when we are all working together to rear a pedagogic movement. But first, let's go get those pieces of paper that tell us that we're smart enough to do so!

This speech took a lot of confidence to get in front of her entire class, classes family, teachers, and administration and bash the school systems we know today. I can honestly say though that she has some very valid points in her speech. One of these points is the fact that kids are not taught life lessons and ways to cope with situations they will face in life. They make you study for tests that you cram information so you can make a good grade and then you forget everything you just studied so you can cram more information for the next test. Children are just put through a institutionalized system. They are not truly being able to critically think and use there full potential. Another point she puts emphases on in her speech is to ask questions. Do not just believe everything they tell you. Ask questions and critically think about what you are being told. Analysis this data and question it. This is what I got from one of my now favorite speeches.

Teach Someone Something - Project 14

Additional Assignment - Mr. McClung's World

PhotobucketAfter examining Mr. McClung's class blog these are my outcomes and conclusions.
1. What do you know (or have you found out) about Mr. McClung that is reflected in the way he has constructed his class blog? One of the major things that stood out to me is that how organized and well his blog was put together.
2. Comment on what you would say about Mr. McClung as an educator. Mr.McClung looks like a teacher who takes pride in seeing his students do well academically.
3. I asked above that you read Mr. McClung's "rules" and think about them. What do they say about Mr. McClung, his teaching, and his connection with his students? What is your reaction to these rules (and guides) as a student and as an aspiring teacher? He has a very hands on and interactive teaching style where he makes sure to keep students involved.
4. What was the first thing under Everyone needs? Why do you suppose that is the first requirement? Everybody needs a day planner. I recently bought a day planner but never use it.
5. Note the penalties for being late (under Homework). Compare them with my penalties for being late. Comment. For everyday your homework is late it is a letter grade off. This is similar to the homework policy I have in several of my classes at South Alabama.
6. Read carefully his paragraph about what he hopes to accomplish with his blog. Comment and apply to your own aspirations as a teacher. His blog is very well put together and is made so that parents can easily keep track of their child's work in the classroom.
7. I asked you to review at least two Useful Links in depth after reviewing all of them. Which two did you review in depth? Describe each of the two. How might each be used? Why do you think each made Mr. McClung's list. The first link I chose was Steve Spanglers Science Toys. The reason I chose this blog is because I feel it would help find ways to get the students to relate science and fun toys together. The second link I chose was ToonDoo which is a website that lets you create your own comic. This could be helpful for several different reasons in an technological education setting.
8. Under Internet Safety I asked you to read carefully the rules Mr. McClung sets forth for safely using the Internet. Comment on these rules. Are there any you would add or subtract? I felt that the set of rules that he had laid out for his class were very well thought through. He allowed the students enough room to learn but enough guidelines to keep them safe and out of trouble.
9. In the C4K part of this blog I asked that you look carefully at one of the categories under which you assigned post was filed. What did you find? Select one of the posts in the category and review it for me. "Just Like Riding a Bike" was the name of the post I commented on it was dealing with basically having time off and having ti get back into the old routine.
10. Mr. McClung uses Edublog as his blog host. In some ways it may seem more "advanced." But Blogger has many abilities that we have not covered in EDM310. This leads to this question: Is there anything (or things) that Mr. McClung can do with his blog that you would like to do in Blogger? His blog is very well organized and easy to navigate. It has alot of useful information put together to look organized.
11. In what ways does Mr. McClung make his blog useful to parents, teachers, administrators, students like you, and others? His blog is easy to find and navigate so even parents with only a small amount of technological intelligence could handle easily. THis allows them to keep up with their children in school with little effort.
12. How does Mr. McClung's 8th grade blog differ from other blogs you have visited including other 8th grade blogs? Why the differences do you think? His blog is so well put together and can be used as a great example for people who plan to be teachers in the near future like myself and others in EDM 310
13. Add any additional comments you think would be useful in analyzing Mr. McClung's World in depth. I only one day can hope to have a blog that has half the information that Mr. McClung's blog has to offer. His blog is organized, easy to find and also easy to navigate through.

First Graders in Ms. Cassidy's Class

The video was mind blowing to me, that kids of that young of age could be doing so well on the computers. The kids in the video looked like they knew their way around the computers better than most adults do and they were only in first grade. I only wish I had a teacher that valued teaching technology as much as Mrs. Cassidy does to her young group of kids. I feel if I would have had an influence like her in my life I would be better prepared for my technological journey I have started. This video shows that you are never too young to begin using technology as a building block in education. Technology can be used to keep kids interested in the curriculum. I thought that it was very nice of her to invest her time in a Skype interview with last semester EDM 310 class. I can only hope that there are more teachers like Mrs. Cassidy out there in the educational field. She has been incorporating technology in the class room for a very long time, ten years to be exact.

Comments for Teachers 3

Bits ‘n Bytes is a blog created by Ann Carnevale (Instructional Technology Specialist), and geared for the elementary teachers of Plainville Community Schools, in Plainville, CT. Her blog was really educational.
For my first comment I commented on her post Should We Use YouTube In Primary Classrooms. This is What I had to say:

Hi Ann,
I am Justin Hyde, and I attend the University Of South Alabama, and I am in Dr. Strange’s EDM 310 class. I think that using YouTube in todays classroom is a great idea. More teachers in todays society need to be more acceptable of technology in schools and this is just one of many quick and easy ways to do this. There are many educational videos on YouTube for children of many different ages.

For my second comment I commented on her post Website Wednesday. This blog post was about a couple different websites that are free and that have a lot of educational information in different subjects. These websites can be found at her in her blog Website Wednesday This is what I had to say:

Hi Ann,
I am Justin Hyde, and I attend the University Of South Alabama, and I am in Dr. Strange’s EDM 310 class. I thought that there were many different things that could be useful to me when I become a teacher in the near future. Thank you so much.

Blog Post 10

I felt like both of these stories Tom Johnson's Don't Let Them Take the Pencils Home and Morgan Bayda's blog post were both about teaching kids information they will never need if they even remember most of it.

Morgan Bayda's

Morgan Bayda's blog post was about a kid that was enrolled at the University of Nebraska but dropped out by choice because he felt he was paying to be taught useless information, when in reality he has a really good point. He talks about how his teachers only reading power points and having there test on random facts from these power points. Your grade is on how well you can memorize facts for one test.

Tom Johnson's Don't Let Them Take the Pencils HomePhotobucket

This poem starts out talking about the acutally not letting the kids bring their pencils home because children who do score less on big state testing but then it goes on to explain what they are actually trying to say. They talk about teaching our children useless information that they will never need in life.

Skype Interview Recorded - Project #12

Blog Post 9

In this weeks blog post we had to read a teachers reflection of their first year as an elementary teacher. This teachers name is Mr. McClung and he was teaching in Noel, Missouri. He has really interesting points about improving your teaching methods. One of the more important topics he stresses is Communication in the work place so there is not any teacher conflicts, its always easier to work in a comfortable environment with no hostility. Another topic he touches on is not expecting too much from your students. Having high expectations for your students is a good thing but if they do not reach these expectations pick them up and help them do better next time. Something that he said that really caught my eye was no matter how much you plan there is no such thin as a perfect lesson. You need to be able to adapt in the middle of the lesson and work with your students to better help them understand the lecture.

Comments For Kids 4, 5, & 6

In my fourth comments for kids I choose to comment on Alexandria blog. She is a Year 6 student at Pt England School in Auckland, NZ. Her teachers name is Miss Garden and her blog post was about getting to use their computers in class. This is what I had to say:

Hi Alexandria, my name is Justin Hyde. I am an EDM310 student at the University of South Alabama. I think that it is very cool that your class gets to use laptops. I wish I would have had the chance to use laptops in class when I was your age.kids on computers"http://muyskens.com/photo2.html""Photobucket">

In my fifth comments for kids I choose to comment on Nathaniel's blog. He goes to Pt England School and is in Year 7. His blog post was about how to layout and set up a tent. This is what I had to say:

Hello Nathaniel,My name is Justin Hyde and I am a student in Dr. Stranges EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama. You can follow my blog at hydejustinedm310.blogspot.com . I thought you had great directions to assemble a tent. If I ever go camping I will make sure to print out these directions.

In my sixth comment for kids I choose to comment on Shawnee's blog. She is student in Mrs. Phares' fourth period class. Shawnee's blog post was about people who are bullies. This is what I had to say:

Hello Shawnee,
My name is Justin Hyde and I am a student in Dr. Stranges EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama. I Like that you shared your feelings about bullies. I also think that it is sad when people get bullied. Bullies pick on others because they are need to feel stronger and better than the people they pick on.

Blog Post 8

Richard Miller: This Is How We Dream Part 1

Richard Miller is a Educator in the English Department at Rutgers University in New Jersey. His video “This Is How We Dream Part 1” starts out talking about in his childhood family he was surrounded with books. This was not a bad thing because he loved books and often read them growing up. Reading is what ended up inspiring him to an English teacher. When I was younger my mother also instilled the fact that reading is very important, and would make me read on a daily basis. Now looking back I am very thankful for that.

He later goes on to talk about how reading and writing is evolving. Once where you had to rent books from a library and write with pen in paper is now something of the past. In my two and half years of college not one time have I had to turn in a paper that was not typed. For one thing teachers don’t have to try and read sloppy hand writing and a typed paper just looks nice and neat. Another advantage of typing a paper is that computers have spell check and will find grammatical errors in your writing for you. Also I have rarely used any of the Libraries that we have on campus. I find it much easier, as do many students I have talked to, to just research the information at home on my personal computer. Not only is this easier but I believe it to be much faster.

Richard Miller: This Is How We Dream Part 2

In Part Two of Richard Miller's video he talks about how do we incorporate technology in to today's classroom. Students no longer want to read off a piece of paper, they would rather have visual aids to go along with their readings. Kids as young as elementary grades are being taught to use computer in school. This was something that I was not introduced to until I was in middle school. Kids are fascinated with technology and this could be used as a great instrument in keeping kids of all ages interested in learning in schools. Educators have no choice, in my opinion, to not use some form of technology in their classrooms. Actually I would go as far as to say that they should use as much technology that they can possibly get their hands on.

EDM310 is Different

Chipper was a student who just thought she had it all figured out. Her biggest problem was being a procrastinator. In EDM 310 Procrastinating will put you in a hole that you will not be able to get out. When they say 9 hours a week, they don’t mean wait till Sunday at try to finish everything in 9 hours. If this is your philosophy in this class good luck. Many times I have spent a lot more than just 9 hours working on our projects, comments, and blog post every week. If I had to make a video like this one I would try to focus it on something like the Importance on coming to the lab for help. Many times I have got stuck on projects and needed help in which the lab was extremely helpful in explain everything in detail and not doing it for me but showing me how to do it so that I could do it myself in the future.

Learn to Change, Change to Learn

One of the very last things that was on this video was “the death of education, but the dawn of learning”, this statement really summed up the whole entire video for me. This video talks about the fact that we shouldn’t be making our children memorize facts that they will forget after there next test and never have to use again in their life. We should be teaching our children how to find information, use the information, and communicate with other students. We should be letting our student’s use social networking for educational purposes and using the internet for researching and finding important information they need in class. Teaching our children useful stuff they will need in the real world such as jobs after school, not just making them memorize stuff for standardized test.

The Secret Powers of Time by Philip Zambardo

This video was very well put together and the way everything was being drawn out really kept me entertained and interested in what was being said. One disturbing fact that stood out to me was that one child drops out of school every nine seconds. Peoples life’s are busy and a lot of people should take more time to sit down and at least have a family dinner a couple times a week if nothing less. Family has always been very important to me and no matter how busy my schedule is I try to always make to time to call both my parents and my siblings. Although I would like to see them more than I do, it is just not really something I can do with my schedule as busy as it stays with school and work.

Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us :by David Pink

What motivates people...? Clearly many people in the world are motivated by money but this shows a different aspect than most people would think. He gives three factors that lead to better performance as well as personal satisfaction, Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose. Paying people more does not motivate them more, but these three thing are what can motivate people to do astonishing workk.

Blog Post 7

Professor Randy Pausch has a very touching story. He has multiple tumors in his liver and was told he will only live healthy for three months. Although from just listening to and looking at Randy you would have no idea. He looks like any ordinary person and is in shape he even does clapping push-ups.

He starts off his speech with touching on his childhood goals and lets you know that you should never be told no or that you cannot be something if you apply yourself to it. He has a very interesting point about parents putting their kids into sports. He says that parents place their children in sports at young ages not to make them professional athletes but to install lifelong lessons such as teamwork, cooperation, responsibilities, leadership skills, and many others.

kids playing soccer

He also makes some valid points while he was a professor teaching a visual arts class. He talks about an instance where he gave a two week project and all his students came back when the two weeks were over with overwhelmingly outstanding work. He was so shocked he talked to his mentor and asked for advice what to do. His mentor explains that if he seems content with their work then they will not have any room for improvement and they will also seem content and then they will not try any harder. He later goes on to tell that there work was so great that on the day their projects were due they would have audiences to present their art work too in class.

At the end of the video he goes to say that he believes in Karma. He says even if you are wrong you should say sorry and do not lie tell the truth. He says that yesterday was his wife’s birthday and even though this is called his last speech and he talks less about himself and focuses the last part on getting the crowd involved in singing happy birthday to her because she did not get the proper birthday. He says luck is where preparation meets opportunity. After the whole speech is over he says this talk was not for you it was for his kids.

Comments 4 Teachers 2

The teacher’s blog whom I was assigned to follow was David Hopkins. David has been a learning technologist at the University of Bournemouth since the year 2007. David graduated in 1996 from Kingston University.

The Horizon Report 2011 – ‘eBooks’ #eBooks #mLearning #eLearning

The first blog post that I read was dealing with eBooks. The 2011 Horizon Report says “As the electronic book moves further from a digital reproduction of a printed piece, some writers are seeing it become something far richer, allowing journeys through worlds real and Imagined, undertaken nit alone but in company with other readers.” This is the web address for his Blog: http://www.dontwasteyourtime.co.uk/elearning/the-future-of-ebooks-my-vision-ebooks/ . I think this is going to be the future of the book. My little brother is only ten years old and he downloads his books onto a Kindle. My mom can easily buy him books to read without even having to leave the house and for a low price.

Can your boss ask for access to your social media accounts? #SoMe

The second blog post I read was about having to give your employer your social media (Facebook, Twitter, Myspace) passwords so they could have complete access to your accounts and private information. It goes on to say that if you deny your employer access to your social media accounts then it looks like you have something to hide. I personally don’t think that they have the right to even ask for this in the first place. His Blog address for this very interesting blog is: http://www.dontwasteyourtime.co.uk/. Overall I was very much impressed with my teacher’s blog from an educational viewpoint.

Project #10 - First PLN Progress Report

My Personal Learning Network, also known as a PLN, is coming along really well. I chose to use Symbaloo.Com to create my PLN. It has been fun to be able to pick and choose what websites I like and be able to have them all on one page. My Personal Learning Network includes websites such as the EDM class blog, my personal blog, USA online, SouthAlabama.edu, links to all of my e-mail accounts, youtube, and one of my personal favorites, ESPN! It is so much more convenient to have all of the website I need on one page rather than having to flip back and forth from window to window. I also have links to my Twitter and Facebook accounts for my personal use. So far, my PLN has proven to be very beneficial for me and I will continue to use it. I think that with all of the things teachers have to keep up with that PLNs make it much easier to do so.

This is what my PLN looks like so far

Comments For Kids 1, 2, & 3

Measurementrulers

My first comment for kids was Ms. Naugles 5th period math class. Their class uses kidblog.org and my specific post that I posted on was about measurements. This is what I had to say:

We are constantly using measurements in our everyday life. Buying groceries at the grocery store you measure several things. How much money you will spend all the way to how many gallons of milk you will need? You always have to measure amounts when cooking. If you go to the gym and work out you have to measure how many pounds you will be working out with. How would you know how long you needed your pants to be or what size shirt you needed? We could not build huge buildings that are sturdy and strongly supported. Measuring is something that we could not live in our society today without. That is why we are taught measurements at a young age in schools.

KPE Episode 339: Fantastic Mr. Fox

My second comment for kids was KPE Episode 339: Fantastic Mr. Fox. It was a podcast done by two young girls on the book Mr. Fantastic Fox. The girls names were Kayla and Sylvia and they are from Pt. England School in Auckland, New Zealand. This is what I said:

Hello Kayla and Sylvia,
My name is Justin Hyde and I am a student in Dr. Stranges EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama. I felt that your podcast was very well put together and you did a great job explaining this interesting book. I like how you did not only just come out and tell details about the book , but you asked informative questions as well. The fact that your images were keeping up with the story telling really kept me entertained. I like the great work KPE keep it up. This is the link to my class blog,http://hydejustinedm310.blogspot.com/, if you would like to get into some interesting discussions about technology in education.

Antonio’s 5th Grade Blog

My third comment for kids was to comment on Antonio’s Blog. He is a Student in the 5th grade at Pt England School in Auckland, New Zealand. He did not have any post from this year so I chose to comment on his last post from the previous year. This is what I said:

Hi Antonio, my name is Justin Hyde. I am an EDM310 student at the University of South Alabama. I read some of your year 4 blog post. I thought that you wrote some really interesting posts. Hopefully I will get to read some more of your posts from your year 5 blog.

Blog Post 6

The Networked Student

Watching this video I felt like I was hearing a summary of our EDM 310 class at the University of South Alabama. Almost everything they talked about in the video we have either already done or plan to do in the near future. I think that learning will be similar to this in class rooms of all ages, it might not be like this in every class a child takes but I honestly think it will be in most. I have said this several times already and I am going to say it again “technology is the key to the future”, whether it is being taught in the classroom or not.
The big question seems to be “Why does the networked student even need a teacher?” Some people just think that kids can learn anything from blogging and exploring the internet. The way I see it is that kids can learn a ton from blogging and exploring the internet but they needed to be guided in the right direction. So my answer to this question is a definite YES!!!! If children get stuck and cannot find the information they need to do their research they need a teacher to give them resourceful web pages. Also for many of the other questions or problems a child could come across, who will they ask if there is no teacher?

A 7th Grader's Personal Learning Environment (or PLN)

I thought that the 7th graders personal learning environment was very similar to our personal learning network. Her personal learning environment was very well organized. She had a great bit of knowledge for someone of her age. This is just another example of why technology should be used in the classrooms. It showed how you can be doing school work while listening to your favorite music. All your basic needs for education and wants for social interaction together in one easy to access place. Kids Interacting with SmartBoard

SmartBoards

I actually found several web pages describing the benefits of the SmartBoard in classrooms, here is the link to one of them http://www.waukeshaschools.com/WIT/smartBoard/benefits.htm . I had SmartBoards in my high school but many teachers did not use them to their full potential. One major disadvantage of the SmartBoard is the simple fact in cost. SmartBoards can be expensive if you are trying to put one in every class. I feel strongly toward using them in classrooms for many reasons. One of these reasons being it is an easy and fast way to get kids involved in physical and visual learning.

A shark

Eagle Nest Radio & Class Blog

This specific podcast that I watched was a 3rd grade class interviewing a shark diver. I think that the kids in the 3rd grade class had fu with this interview. They had a lot of educational and entertaining questions. They asked Mr. Ward one question and as soon as he finished the asked him another. This just goes to show you how much technology in education is changing the way we learn today. In the 3rd grade I could barley work my way around a computer and had no idea what a podcast even was. You could tell that this podcasts was very well thought out and produced extremely well for the age of children that were involved. This is a great way to teach kids at a young age that technology can be used in learning, it can be fun, and also that it is easy.

100 Ways to Use Your iPod to Learn and Study Better

100 Ways to Use Your iPod to Learn and Study Better is a website that literally gives you a hundred ways to increase your learning and studying ability. It has numerous apps and programs that you can use to make your iPod a extremely resourceful thing. It defiantly shows you that an iPod can be used for educational purposes and not just for listening to music. I thought this website was very interesting and I could see it being helpful to me in the future. It should be a website every teacher informs her students about.

The benefits of podcasting in the classroom

The benefits of podcasting in classrooms is a video that shows several different examples of reasons why teachers should use podcast in schools. One example shows a girl that is sick and cannot make school, but if her teacher used podcasts she could just get online and watch the lecture. I talks about how you can easily keep parents involved in what their children are learning in schools by simply posting podcast on a website. The children can listen to the lecture again after hearing it in class to help them for studying purposes. I think this is a great way of improving children’s ways off learning and also teach them a little about technology.

Don't Teach Your Kids This Stuff. Please?

In this poem it is basically pointing out all the negative aspects of the use of internet in schools. It touches on the idea students will just use the internet for porn. It say's pen and paper are not going anywhere, but I beg to differ. Pen and paper may still be here but they will not be used nearly as much. The world is growing to new times and technology seems to be the key to the future. Sure some of the negative things that were mentioned may happen but everything has flaws. If people do not ever take chances and try something new they can not be open for advancement. If everyone always played it safe we might still think the earth was flat. The internet can be used for so many great things that I do not see how people can use these few negative reasons as an argument to not use the internet in school settings.

Scott Mcleod has several different prestiges titles and awards. Dr.Mcleod is an Associate Professor in the Educational Administration program at Iowa State University. He post on several different blogs about technology these include dangerouslyirrelevant.org and occasionally at The Huffington Post. He also is the Director of the UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education, which is the nations only academic center dedicated to the technology needs of school administrators.

The iSchool Initiative

Schools are always looking to save money due to the fact that they are government funded. So why not look at the iSchool Initiative? The iSchool Initiative is based off every student in the class and the teacher only using an iTouch. All assignments are turned in using email on the iTouch. Books will be downloaded to the iTouch. The internet will be restricted to only allow academic use.

Now that you know a little about the iSchool Initiative let me tell you some of the instant benefits. For one by downloading the books to their iTouch they do not have to carry around a bunch of heavy textbooks. They have instant access to communicate with their teachers and classmates with email and texting at their finger tips. Students can not use the excuse that they forgot their homework. Now some people may say its too expensive to buy everyone an iTouch but these people have not ever bought a classroom set of textbooks, which are quite expensive and not to mention go out of date every couple of years, and this will be instantly saving the schools money.

Watch The Lost Generation

I think in many ways this video is very true. People in our day and age go out of their way to destroy the environment. I feel a change does need to be made in the way people are living their lives. Since when is your profession more important than your own flesh and blood. People need to step back and look at the way they are living their lives. a Change can be made if enough people do something about it. The way her video was delivered was interesting. She stated a list of facts that were scrolling downwards, when she got done she said "all of this will come true unless we choose to rewrite it" then scrolling upwards she rewords everything she just stated but in the opposite order it was said in the beginning. This was a really creative way of getting her point across.

Eric Whitacre’s Virtual Choir

In this video it just goes to show how the internet connects people from all over the world. I thought it was amazing how these people have never met but can get together on the internet and have such a wonderful performance. It also makes you wander what all can we accomplish on the internet. I cant even imagine how they got everybody together to perform something to this extent. I know that i still have a ton to learn about using the internet to it's full potential.

Teaching in the 21st Century

This video makes you think, are our schools teaching students what they need to know. What teachers are trying to teach the students can be found easily on the internet. Should we teach our children the facts or how to find the facts? The world is changing constantly and everyday we become more technologically equipped. I think we need to teach our kids on what they will need to know when they graduate, which is technology.

Michael Wesch: A Vision of Students Today

This video was made by a class at Kansas State University. I believe the purpose of this video was to show that kids are not interested in learning. It showed that kids are studying for a test and forgetting the material. They forget the material because they do not feel it is something that they will need to know in life. The teachers don’t know who they are and do not care if they pass or fail which is way different from when they were in high school, so some students don’t get motivated.

When students are not getting motivated they lose focus and start playing on their phones or doing other stuff and stop paying attention all together. A lot of kids just do not go to class, even though they are paying for it, because it is not required to make every class in some classes. In the video it shows how much time students spend on activities other than their school. Students are not getting motivated and they feel that schools are just trying to make money off the. One example is making students buy textbooks for a class and then not even using the books.

"It's Not About the Technology"

This article by Kelly Hines I found to very interesting. She has a very good point technology plays a big part in everyone’s everyday life but not everything is about technology. If you put the best technology in a bad teacher’s class then their teaching skills are not going to get any better, they are going to still be a bad teacher. Technology can make learning easier though if used in the right ways. Also technology is interesting and can make learning fun so that students will want to get involved.

Another good point that she had was if teachers are teaching lessons that their class is not grasping maybe it is not that the kids cannot learn, but they need to take a different approach to the matter. All students don’t learn the same either. Some students get bored just listening to lectures day after day and cannot stay focused and then don’t learn the material. The teacher could solve this problem by just doing hands on activities or just simply get the students involved in learning.

Karl Fisch: Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher?

Do I believe that teachers can be technologically illiterate and it is okay? I think that the answer to this question is yes and no. Honestly I do not think it is and should be okay for teachers to technologically illiterate. I feel that teachers should know at least to a certain extent how to teach with technology. The simple fact that they don’t want to learn or don’t like technology is not an excuse because whether they like it or not technology is becoming used more and more every day.

The other side to this argument is simply this there are teachers all over the world that are technologically illiterate and nothing is being done about it. In my high school we had Smart Boards in every class. Now with that said I only used the Smart Board in maybe half of these classes. In some cases the teachers would use an old chalkboard right next to the Smart Board. Either they were afraid of breaking the new expensive equipment or they did not know how to use it. Regardless the point is nothing was being done to change the fact that the technology was not being used.

Gary Hayes Social Media Count

As you can see from the image above Technology is growing at a crazy fast rate. As a matter of fact faster than it has ever grown before. It makes you wander what the future has in store for us. I think that technology can be used to keep kids interested in learning and that it can be beneficial for both teachers and students. In this way students can be motivated to learn and for teachers it can be a easier way to teach if used in the right way.

C4T #1 Jenny Luca

My C4T assignment was to comment on Ms.Jenny Luca's Blog page. Ms. Jenny is Head of Information Services at Toorak College in Mt.Eliza, Australia.
For my first comment was on her blog post about wanting to become a Google Instructor. Her blog post was a video interview for a Google instructor an she was discussing how children do not use books for finding information, they just Google it.This was my comment:

Hi my name is Justin Hyde and I am a student in EDM310 at the University of South Alabama. I do feel that education is being changed more and more everyday. Where you would once have to go to a library, find a book, and then read the needed material, you can now do the same thing on the internet in a fraction of the time with a simple Google search. This opens a whole new window of education and learning. It makes you think what if one day students will not even go to class and everything will be done over web chats and online videos. Good luck with becoming a Google Instructor.

I have been assigned to follow your blog for the next month and after the month is up I will be writing a blog on what I have learned. You can follow my blog at hydejustinedm310@blogspot, our class blog is edm310@blogspot, and also you can find me on twitter @jchyde01.

The second blog that I commented on was a post about Twitter and how it is being used more and more everyday. She explains that Twitter is becoming a vital component in education and that technology is becoming increasingly more popular each and every day. Twitter, if used correctly, can be a professional tool and helps you stay connected with people from all around the world. This is the comment that I wrote her:

I am starting to myself find out that Twitter can be useful for staying up to date with valuable information. At first i thought it was a extremely overrated way to see when friends are doing their laundry, but now I am starting to understand it is all about who you follow. Following the right people and you can have all kinds of useful information.

Blog Post 2

1 Did You Know?

Some of the facts are just mind blowing. For example that one out of eight couples married in the United States last year met on the Internet. A lot of these facts are showing how the United States is falling behind in the world. Take this in consideration soon China will be the number English speaking country. Twenty five percent of India population with highest IQ is greater than the total population in the United States.

I had no idea that the United States was so far behind in technology. This it self is scary because the world is becoming so technologically based. I myself did not know that there were more text sent everyday then there are people in the world. Another thing that I could not believe is that if MySpace was country it would be the fifth largest in population.

2 Mr. Winkle Wakes

The world has greatly changed over the last hundred years. Some of the simplest stuff that people take for granted were never even thought of 100 years ago. For example, driving yourself to school and printing out your homework. Cars and computers are just two examples of the many technological inventions.

With all the new technology being introduced into the world you would think that schooling and education would be more involved. Schools are one of the most non-technological places around. You will see high-tech computers in businesses and in hospitals, but old outdated computers in the classroom. This doesn’t make sense to me because schools are where we teach the future of our country.

3. Sir Ken Robinson

We are supposed to be educating our children in schools for the future, but by the time we teach them one thing it has already gone out of date within two years. The world is growing at an extremely fast rate. Children are sometimes misunderstood. Children are taught one specific way but not all children learn the same way. Children are not afraid to make mistakes.

Children are all very creative, but if you make a child do the same thing all of the time, they loose a lot of their creativity. Why shouldn’t children be able to choose what they want to take in elementary schools as an elective like they are able to choose in high school? I am not saying that we shouldn’t educate children in core subjects but we should allow them to choose if they would like to take P.E., dance, or music courses. If we did this would we have more artists and athletes?

4. Cecelia Gault

A young Finland student, Cecelia Gault, interviewed Sir Ken Robinson to touch on a few key points on education. He talks about balancing art and science in schools. He also feels we should make better use of technology in education. He shares that schools should be more involved with the community.

5. Vicki Davis: Harness your students’ digital smarts

In this video, Vicki Davis is getting her class more involved with technology. She shares how she blogs and teaches not through pencil and paper but through technology and computers. Teaching with pen and paper can only take you so far and only some students are able to learn with just a pen and paper. The Internet allows you to do so much more than what generations before us were able to do. She uses new terms and has the students use Google to look them up.

She doesn’t want them to do things the same way over and over again. She wants them to explore and find new ways to accomplish things on their computers. The students learn many different things and sometimes-even help Ms. Davis learn a few new things. She lets them know that by blogging you can stay connected with people from all over the world.
